A short break self-guided walking holiday centred on the Somerset historic village of Nunney.

Relax and enjoy the beauty and peace of the English countryside. Nunney is situated three miles west of the market town of Frome. The beautiful historic village of Nunney was established on the wool and cloth industry. The name of the village comes from old English and means Nunna’s Island. There are a number of weaver’s cottages to be seen in the village as well as the village Guard House in Horn Street.

With the comprehensive route descriptions and maps you will be able to enjoy this wonderful landscape at your own leisurely pace.

Accommodation in Nunney in Somerset

Your accommodation for this walking break will be a historic Inn in Nunney, Somerset. The Inn is an 17th century coaching Inn located in the centre of the village. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

The holiday is offered on Bed & Breakfast basis. The Inn has an excellent reputation for great food, friendly service and a relaxing ambience combining period features with ambient lighting and contemporary decor.

Walking information packs are provided by your hosts which include walk notes, route maps and details of the local area. You should be able to cover a distance of 2 miles level walking within one hour, which is a very relaxed pace allowing plenty of time for stops and enjoying the sights and landscape.

Your own transport is required to enjoy this holiday.

Height gained on the walks is mainly up to 300 metres, but up to 600 metres on one day. Some previous hiking experience is advisable.

Somerset walking holiday itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive at your accommodation.

Day 2 – The Castle Walk (8.5mls/13.6kms). From the village of Nunney you head through the village passing Nunney Mill and across pastureland and into woodland where the path takes you alongside the Nunney Brook. You continue past Railford Works making your way towards the conservation village of Mells. On reaching Mells you then follow the Mells Stream to Great Elm and on through woodland to Whatley, across pastureland to join the Nunney Brook back to Nunney.

Day 3 – Stourhead and King Alfred’s Tower (E:5mls/8kms or 9mls/14.4kms). This walk is on the Stourhead Estate which is owned by the National Trust and takes you from King Alfred’s Tower along forest tracks and across open countryside. The route is mostly along the old ‘Carriage Way’ used by the owners of Stourhead House in days gone by. This short walk will enable you to spend time visiting the famous gardens of Stourhead and visit the manorial Stourhead House and also climb the two hundred and five steps to the top of the tower if desired. From the top of the tower you have wonderful views across the three counties of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Day 4 – Bradford-on-Avon – Farleigh Hungerford Castle (M:7.5mls/12kms). A walk which starts at the historic market town of Bradford-on-Avon and includes waterside stretches along the banks of the River Frome,River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal. The route takes you to the ‘English Heritage’ romantic medieval castle ruins at Farleigh Hungerford. On leaving the castle you continue over pastureland to the pretty village of Iford and return back to Bradford-on-Avon.

Day 5 – Departure after breakfast.
