Walking in Bavaria
This self-guided walking holiday offers a variety of hiking experiences, mostly easy to medium walk. You should be in average or above average hiking ability. You’ll walk on well-kept hiking paths as well as forest roads. If the path seems too steep, you can get a ride or take a cable car. The average daily walking time is about 5 “comfortable” hours. More challenging options are available for people who really like to hike!
The route passes through idyllic alpine pastures and charming restaurants where you can enjoy “Brotzeit”, a time to enjoy hearty, local cuisine.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival to Garmisch Partenkirchen
Day 2: Garmisch – Partnachklamm Gorge – Klais – Train to Mittenwald
Today’s start of the day begins near the steep Partnachklamm Gorge. This gorge was declared a natural monument in 1912. Take your choice of walking next to the river or on a high bridge overlooking the river. Afterwards, hike across lush hills and scenic alpine pastures to Klais. Afterwards please take the train to your hotel in Mittenwald.
Distance: 15.15 km and approx. 5 hours of walking time. 750m difference of altitude
Day 3: Mittenwald – „Geisterklamm“ (Ghost Gorge) – Leutasch
This exciting hike takes you along a path next to the gorge. To make the route accessible to walkers, there are bridges rising up to 40 m above the water. Afterwards, relax on an easy stroll along the Leutascher Ache into the valley. You’ll pass quaint hamlets and flower meadows with Wetterstein Mountain forming a stunning backdrop as you walk into the widening Leutasch Valley. Enjoy your hotel stay in Leutasch.
Distance: 14 km and approx. 4 hours of walking time. 200m difference of altitude
Day 4: Rest Day or Walking tour to Seefeld.
Today you are free to relax or hike over small summits to several scenic lakes around Seefeld. If you decide to hike, simply take the local bus back to your hotel in Leutasch.
Distance: 9 km and approx. 3 hours of walking time. 300m difference of altitude
Distance: 11.5 km and approx. 4.5 hours of walking time. 450m difference of altitude
Day 5: Leutasch – Ehrwald
Summer in Gaistal Valley is a picture perfect with wooden chalets, energetic ponies and brown cattle grazing in the fields. Start your walk on the Ganghofer Path across the alpine pastures up to the crossing to Ehrwalder Alm. Your views of spectacular scenery continue as you take the cable car downhill. Get a good night’s sleep in your Ehrwald hotel!
Distance: 14 km and approx. 5 hours of walking time. 500m difference of altitude
Day 6: Ehrwald – Lake Eibsee – Train/Bus to Garmisch
Today’s walk takes you up to the foot of Mount Zugspitze where you’ll see the famous scenic view of Lake Eibsee. Your hike ends at the lovely lake with another amazing view of the Zugspitz-Garmisch panorama. Breathtaking! If you like, take the cable car in Ehrwald to Mount Zugspitze or Lake Eibsee. Then return to Garmisch by train or bus and go to your hotel.
Distance: 13 km and approx. 4 hours of walking time. 500m difference of altitude
Day 7: Time to pack and leave the beautiful Garmisch area!
