Set on the edge of the picturesque Nockberge Mountains the area is a walker’s paradise. With the opportunity to walk over peaks at 2.000 metres or in the beautiful valleys around crystal clear lakes, the area has something for every need. This is truly one of the most beautiful regions of Austria.
Accommodation in Lake Millstatt area
We are a small group of private accommodation providers, all native English speakers. Together we offer 4 styles of accommodation, from self-catering apartments, B&B or Halfboard, all providing a typical English warm welcome.
Haus Catton is your mountain retreat. The quiet, rural setting is ideal for the get-away holiday.
Haus Starfach is situated in a raised position offering stunning views across Lake Millstatt.
Pension Julia is on the edge of the pretty lakeside village of Feld-am-See.
The Karlsdorfer Hof with its large guest garden is ideal for a relaxing holiday.
Walking around the Millstattersee
The numerous marked trails make the area a walker’s paradise. Traditional mountain huts provide welcome rest stops along the way. Many offering homemade products and a traditional ‘Jausen’. Walks are available for all grades of walkers.
Below are some example walks as a taster
Easy to medium difficulty walks
Kneipp Ring on Mirnock. This is a medium difficulty walk and offers views across lake Millstättersee as far as Grossglockner Glacier. Altitude rise: 500m Distance: 7km
A must is the Süduferweg; peaceful and relaxing away from the traffic with views across the lake to Millstatt and the Nochberg mountains. With regular ferry points along the way, you are able to decide how far you go!
Altitude rise: 0m Distance: 25km (complete circumference)
Just outside Radenthein is the ancient Langalmtal, where at the turn of the Century there were over 30 small mills, using the flow of the river Rußbach to mill grain for bread making. At the top of the valley, is a well situated Hut. Where you can enjoy a cold drink or a traditional Austrian dish. Classes are held during July and August, showing the traditional bread making techniques. Altitude rise: 200m Distance 6km
These walks are graded easy to medium and provide a small sample of what is available. Each accommodation will be happy to assist and advice you on suitable walks.
For the serious walkers
The Mirnock Circular route at 2,000 metres will take approximately 5-6 hours.
The Gorge Path from Millstatt following the Reigenbach to the Schwaigerhütte – 3-4 hours.
Gentian and Garnet Path starting and finishing at the Lammersdorfer Hütte at 1600m, climbs to the Lammersdorfer Alm and beyond to Stana Mandl at 2063m and the peak of the Obermillstätter Almkreuz. 3-4 hours
Circular route from Haus Catton over the Hohensass to Bad Kleinkirchheim. 3 hours
These walks are graded medium to difficult and provide a small sample of what is available. Each accommodation will be happy to assist and advice you on suitable walks.
